ConPaaS team to launch ConPaaS-1.2 introducing Platform-as-a-Service over multi-clouds
2013-06-17, Amsterdam/Leipzig - The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Contrail consortium have launched Contrail PaaS (ConPaaS) release 1.2. This release extends ConPaaS with multi-cloud deployment, and support for complex applications.
Until ConPaaS, considerable system administrator skills were needed to deploy applications in the Cloud. ConPaaS simplifies the way applications can be started and managed in the Cloud. With ConPaaS, deploying applications making full use of the capabilities of the Cloud requires only a few mouse clicks.
ConPaaS provides a collection of scalable, Cloud-ready services for hosting various types of applications. The previous release 1.1 already supported PHP, Java, SQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, TaskFarming services and XtreemFS POSIX file system service which allows ConPaaS applications to share data through files as in a single local machine.
ConPaaS 1.2 the newest release of Contrail's Platform-as-a-Service is available today for download.
The most important new features of ConPaaS 1.2 are:
- multi-cloud deployments,: Integrate any combination of private clouds (running OpenNebula) and Amazon EC2 regions for application cloud bursting.
- the possibility to deploy complex applications described in application manifests: Compose complex applications from individual services, allowing "one click" cloud application
- deployment over ConPaaS.
- Virtual Private Networks: Based on the proven IPOP overlay technology, ConPaaS provides a secure VPN overlay, while integrating all private and public clouds in use by an application.
- Performance monitoring: ConPaaS now deploys the Ganglia system monitor for collecting performance information as the basis for automated service scaling.
- Support for safe data node removal in the XtreemFS service: The XtreemFS service now supports scaling data nodes by redistributing user data when adding or removing data nodes at runtime.
"This release marks a major milestone for ConPaaS", says Thilo Kielmann, ConPaas project manager at the VU Amsterdam. "It allows complex applications to run on multiple clouds, while using a reliable XtreemFS Cloud file system for storage."
"ConPaaS is one of the main achievements of the Contrail project", says Christine Morin, Contrail project coordinator. "Release 1.2 shows ConPaaS can be used to support complex applications together with another Contrail component, XtreemFS. As part of Contrail's complete federated cloud stack that also contains Federated Identity management, Virtual Execution Platform and SLA support, it can even tackle more demanding cloud deployments."
