Background

The Contrail summer school on Cloud and Grid computing is the successor to the two successful XtreemOS summer schools held in September 2009 (Oxford, UK) and July 2010 (Reisenburg, Germany).

The Contrail Summer School will include lectures on modern distributed paradigms such as Grid computing, Cloud computing, and network-centric operating systems. The Summer School will combine lectures from research leaders shaping the future of distributed systems and world leaders in deploying and exploiting distributed infrastructures. Hands-on laboratory exercises and practical sessions using Grid and cloud software will give participants experience on using modern distributed systems.

 

Aims

The aims of the Contrail Summer School are:

• To introduce participants to emergent computing paradigms such as Grid computing and Cloud computing,
• To provide lectures and practical courses on novel techniques to achieve scalability, elasticity, quality of service and security in distributed systems,
• To present IaaS and PaaS cloud systems,
• To provide a forum for participants to discuss their research work and share experience with experienced researchers.

 

Target audience

The school is open to postgraduate level students (MSc, PhD) and young researchers (from technical industries, research laboratories and academic environments) who have recently started (or are about to start) working on grid and cloud research projects.
 Prospective students from computer science, computational science and application backgrounds will be encouraged to apply; Basic knowledge in distributed systems is the only prerequisite. Cloud 
and Grid newcomers and beginners are welcome, but people already involved in Cloud and Grid projects should also benefit from this school.

 

 

The Contrail Summer School is an official activity of the EU Contrail Project.
