INRIA the French national institute for research in computer science and control, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and com- munication science and technology (ICST). The Institute also plays a major role in technology transfer by fostering training through research, diffusion of scientific and technical information, development, as well as providing expert advice and participating in international programs. The Institute's strategy closely combines scientific excellence with technology transfer. INRIA's chief goal for 2008-2012 is to achieve major scientific and technological breakthroughs in seven priorities, among which two are directly related to CONTRAIL objectives: Communicating: Design and Evaluation of New Internet Architectures, Communicating: Services and Uses. INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfer and entrepreneurship in the field of ICST.
 

Role in Contrail

INRIA is the CONTRAIL project's coordinator. INRIA will ensure the administrative, financial and technical management of the project. The Myriads research group (http://www. irisa.fr/myriads) led by Christine Morin at INRIA Rennes - Bretagne Atlantique will contribute to CONTRAIL RTD activities, bringing expertise in the areas of operating systems, large-scale dynamic distributed systems, grid and cloud computing. Aladdin/G5K platform for experimenting large-scale distributed systems will serve as a testbed for the CONTRAIL project.

CNR - Italian National Research Council

The Italian National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization, whose duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge, to foster its growth and application to the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country. ISTI and IIT are two of the most prominent ICT institutes of the CNR. The HPC Laboratory of the Institute of Information Science and Technologies (ISTI) is funded by national, EC agencies and industry projects. The laboratory conducts research in various areas of high performance computing, with a focus on parallel programming tools, scalable applications for Cluster of Workstations and the Grid, and Peer to Peer systems, as well as in application areas of data-intensive computing, key ones being Data Mining and Web Information Retrieval. The HPC lab has had a key role in several initiatives on Grid Computing, HPC and Software Services: GRID.IT, CoreGrid, NextGrid, GridCoord, Grid@Asia, the Global Grid Forum, XtreemOS, S-Cube.


The Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) of CNR is active in the field of ICT and Computational Sciences. IIT has its sights set on the Future Internet, both from a modellistic-algorithmic and from a technological-applicational point of view. The Information Security Group of IIT-CNR has a significant R&D expertise on access and usage control in distributed and mobile systems, enforcing techniques, risk management, and formal policy languages for security and trust management. The group has also a relevant experience on running national and EU projects, as it carried out European projects from FP6 and FP7, such as SENSORIA, BIONETS, ARTIST2 GRIDTrust, S3MS, CONNECT and CONSEQUENCE.

Role in Contrail

CNR will bring in the project its expertise in research and development of parallel and distributed
computing solutions, in dynamic adaptation and in trust and security Management. CNR will set up a cluster to join the CONTRAIL testbed.

Genias Benelux (The Netherlands)

Genias Benelux is a computer consultancy and software company, providing solutions, project management and implementation services. The areas of expertise range from High Performance and Grid Computing to XML software. In Grid and HPC computing, the activities of Genias are centered around EnterTheGrid.com. EnterTheGrid is a main information service on Grid Computing and High Performance Computing (HPC) and e-Infrastructures in Europe. It provides a comprehensive range of services including the largest directory on Grid computing in the world, Grid computing and analysis, and the largest Grid computing and HPCN news source in he world: EnterTheGrid Primeur magazine. At the core of the EnterTheGrid services is its database on Grid computing containing information on all projects, companies and products in the world. EnterTheGrid Primeur Magazine provides a weekly update directly to people's email boxes, and provides live coverage from major events. The information servers maintained by Genias attract about 50.000 different visitors each month, from all over the world. Also, Genias is a founding partner of AlmereGrid. Genias also publishes the Virtual Medical Worlds Magazine, a magazine on telemedicine, virtual surgery and enabling technologies such as HPCN, virtual reality and large database technology.

 
Some of the earlier European projects that Genias participated in are: HoiseNM, WebSET, IERAPSI, Eroppa, Dynamite and EIRGSP. WebSET has also produced a set of standardised medical e-learning objects and a complete e-learning environment. The objective of EROPPA was to design, implement and test remote access for Post Production Companies to 3D graphics applications running on High Performance Computer Centers. The European project Dynamite (Dynamic PVM) aimed to provide the software and the method to let workstations work inter-actively when needed and to use their spare CPU time for massively parallel computing tasks. To realise this, the workstations had to be monitored constantly and every change in workload would have to result in a different distribution of the computer tasks at hand. EIRGSP is the support project for the e-Infrastructure reflection Group (e-IRG). Genias produced the knowledge base: http://KnowledgeBase.e-irg.eu for this project. Genias Benelux bv is also involved in the e-IRGSP3 project that is the follow on project to e-IRGSP and e-IRGSP3.
 

Role in Contrail

Within the project Genias will lead the dissemination and exploitation activities and contribute to the testing with its participation in the AlmereGrid testbed.

Constellation Technologies

Constellation Technologies Ltd  is a spin out SME from STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The Company is commercialising grid and cloud computing technologies from the STFC and other European based academic institutions. Grid/cloud computing is an exciting growth area of IT services but requires considerable skills in developing products and services that are useful and easy to use for customers. Translating the theoretical benefits from using grid/cloud computing into real advantages within businesses is both complicated and problem specific. The Company has been set up to provide this detailed and unique service to individual customers which have these massive computing needs. Constellation supplies any grid/cloud computing solution to any customer needing access to massive computing tasks. Large scale computing requirements can be found across many industrial sectors; financial services, pharmaceutical/biotech, media, metrology, engineering and many others. The service depends on the demand but almost always involves grid, cloud and application program development. Constellation already has already sold cloud solutions to a major pharmaceutical company by providing expertise and technology to addressing their large computing challenges. The Company is also involved in a number of other initiatives to exploit the research work developed from the UK and European research base.

Role in Contrail

Constellation's role in the project will be mainly to exploit the results of the research project. Constellation is leading the Cloud business model task in WP3 and the exploitation & technology transfer work-package WP16. It will provide feedback from potential industrial users on their technical and business requirements. It will promote the work performed within this research programme to industrial end-users. It will develop relationships with potential end-users in order to develop commercial applications to use the resultant technology. It will support all attempts to exploit the developed technology for use in the commercial environment. Constellations left the project in 2013.

Hewlett Packard Italiana S.r.l - Italy Innovation Center

HP-IIC (Italy Innovation Center) is one of HP's European Innovation Centers. Since 1999, it is carrying on applied research, technology transfer and innovative solutions integration in leading edge areas. It can rely upon an excellence level team of researchers, consolidated skills and methodologies, and a physical infrastructure supporting project development and demonstration.

Role in Contrail

HP-IIC will contribute to CONTRAIL RTD activities, bringing expertise in Grid computing, Cloud computing (Eucalyptus, Hadoop) and Security. HP-IIC will lead WP3 on Service Level Agreements and will mainly offer contributions to WP2 on IaaS federations, and will be involved in different tasks in SP2, SP3, SP4 and SP5.

Science and Technology Facilities Council

STFC  is a UK public sector organisation whose role is to provide access to large scale scientific facilities for researchers in the UK. The researchers who use these facilities require an advanced IT infrastructure to support them including massive data storage, high end supercomputing, vast network bandwidth, and interoperability with the IT infrastructure of the UK researchers and the international facilities. STFC was a member of many Esprit and IST projects from FP2 to FP6, in particular in areas such as grid computing (CoreGRID, Akogrimo, XtreemOS), grid security (GRASP, TrustCoM, GridTrust) and the international production infrastructure grid EGEE I & EGEE II.

Role in Contrail

STFC brings to Contrail a long experience in the areas of distributed systems, trust and security management, grid computing and cloud computing.

Tiscali Italia SpA founded in January 1998, following the liberalization of the telecommunication market in Italy has become one of the main alternative Telecommunication Operators in Europe. The Company has achieved a considerable international position through a number of targeted acquisitions, which led to a rapid expansion in the main European markets and permitted to build up an extensive IP network. Tiscali is now able to supply its customers with a wide range of services, from Narrowband and Broadband Internet access to more specific and technologically advanced products, including Voip, portal and multimedia services, IPTV, mobile, etc. As of 31 March 2009, Tiscali had more than 2.7 million active users in Italy and the UK.

Role in Contrail

TISCALI will lead the use cases and demonstration activities of the Contrail project and will collaborate both on the business plan and testbed deployment in order to ensure a concrete industrial exploitation of the project results.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (VUA) has been founded in 1880. In research rankings, its Computer Science Department gets ranked first in The Netherlands and among the top within the European Union. The Computer Systems group at the Vrije Universiteit is headed by Prof. Andrew Tanenbaum. Its distributed systems activity follows two major strands of research: one on large-scale distributed systems and one on high-performance distributed computing. The distributed systems group is headed by Prof. Maarten van Steen and Dr. Guillaume Pierre. The main emphasis is on the design, development, and evaluation of techniques for large-scale systems. The group has a long-standing tradition in systems research and is renowned for their work on Amoeba, Minix, and Globe. In the past decade, there has been a shift from traditional distributed systems to systems that span the Internet and on topics concerning security, support of various kinds of wireless and wired networks, heterogeneity of participating nodes, scalable application hosting, and, above all, decentralization of processes, data, and control. The high-performance distributed computing group is headed by Prof. Henri Bal and Dr. Thilo Kielmann.

The research emphasis is on programming abstractions and efficient communication environments for high- performance applications, on clusters, grids, and cloud platforms. The group is internationally recognized for their work on the Orca parallel language, the MagPIe library, the Manta and Ibis platforms for high-performance Java, as well as their work on the Grid Application Toolkit (GAT), and the Simple API for Grid Applications (SAGA).

Role in Contrail

Within the Contrail project, VUA will lead the work packages on virtual infrastructure networks and on runtime environments. It will bring its experience in designing, building and evaluating innovative system-level solutions for scalable computing systems.

XLAB razvoj programske opreme in svetovanje d.o.o.

XLAB research department is recognised as one of the strongest Computer Science research teams outside the academic world in Slovenia. The XLAB research department employs 30 people, where 3 have a PhD in Computer Science, 5 have Master's degrees and 4 are post-graduate students (2 PhD, 3 Master's theses). Altogether the whole company's team consists of 50+ experts in the field of computer science, electronics and mathematics. Distributed systems are our primary area of activity, where we focus on: Grid computing, peer-to-peer networks, service-oriented architectures, resource organization and discovery, multi-agent technologies, bio-inspired computing, security and dependability of distributed systems. Additionally we are working in the field of Computer vision, Computer visualization, and Artificial intelligence (qualitative reasoning, machine learning, and evolutionary computing). System and application level expertise also includes numerical analysis, simulations, combinatorial optimisation, operating system design and implementation, and web based applications.

Role in Contrail

XLAB will provide its knowledge and expertise on the resource provisioning, SLA enforcement techniques and security infrastructures to the RTD activities. XLAB will alsobe aiding the Contrail developers in the integration and the code quality assurance efforts.

Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin

Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB), founded in 1984, is a non-university research institute of the State of Berlin for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. Within the Computer Science department, which is headed by Prof. Alexander Reinefeld, ZIB operates supercomputers and data archives that are among the most powerful in Germany. As a major driving force in science and science-politics, ZIB pushed the establishment of the German eScience initiative D-Grid and the Open Grid Forum. The computer sciences department at ZIB focuses on parallel and distributed systems, more specifically on distributed data management, scalable services, and autonomous computing. With providing consulting services to supercomputer users and developing parallel and distributed systems for clusters and Grids, ZIB is in the unique position to be able to evaluate designs from both perspectives, from the HPC user's point of view and from the Grid researchers perspective. ZIB is involved in five national projects on the advancement of Grid technology. Within the EU project XtreemOS, ZIB heads the design and implementation of the federated file system XtreemFS.

Role in Contrail

ZIB brings its expertise in large scale distributed data management and analysis into the Contrail project. ZIB will provide access to large clusters and storage area network as testbed resources. A recently acquired cloudserver with more than 50 CPUs has been set aside for benchmarking the Contrail software.

Role in Contrail

LINAGORA will provide its expertise about open source projects development and packaging. We are mainly involved in WP11 "integration, testing and release management" and we will have the responsibility of the collaborative development platform (open-source forge) as well as the integration process and release management.
